Why is applying to theatre school so different?

Deciding to Apply

Together, your family needs to decide if going to a theatre program is the right choice. Not all families support this kind of specialized training, at least right out of high school. If this is the choice you want to make, you may want to talk to Julianna about the difference between a BA, a university BFA, a conservatory BFA, what an MFA track looks like, and which may be right for you. If you decide to apply, there are things to keep in mind.

What you may not know about applications yet.

Don't Blame Yourself

If you’re a little confused, that’s normal. Applying to a theatre program involves different steps than a regular college application process. There are pre-screens, headshots, portfolios, resumes, auditions and interviews…and every one of them can be a high-stakes venture.

Each School Is Different

That’s what’s wonderful - you have a lot of philosophies and training approaches to choose from. However, there is no standard application process. That means each school will require something different, on a different timeline. Anticipating and preparing for these demands is difficult if you haven’t done it before.

What it’s ABOUT

It’s about the student, and it’s about the work they’ve done. For auditions, actors have to walk into the room and confidently represent themselves. That isn’t easy for teenagers to do. Directors, designers, and stage managers have to represent and defend their work in a mature and professional way. It takes practice. They need help.
